General Information
The Gator Bowl Regatta is often delightful shirtsleeve-weather sailing
in 10 knot breezes – but can also be a swashbuckling ride with heavy
winds and what Floridians call cold. It is one of the club’s most
popular events for boats ranging from Hobie 16s to PHRF, and is also a part of the Florida Flying Scot District Championship series.
One-design and open Portsmouth classes generally race Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Race committees have usually tried to accommodate fleets with special requests for particular formats. PHRF classes and Multi Hull Open race is Sunday afternoon.
For the last seven years, the Florida Flying Scot fleet has issued the Gator Challenge to other districts to send their boats down to Jax for
the Gator Bowl. Close to twenty Scots will mix it up in competition not just for the usual class trophies, but for Wally Gator – a team trophy with a perpetual that could only be from Florida. Wally Gator is awarded to the district with the top three boats in the Scot class. Carolina District sailors took the trophy home a few times, but it’s recently stayed in Florida. Carolina, come on down and try again!
